Picture a future where artificial intelligence (AI) takes center stage in shaping persuasive narratives that determine the success of entrepreneurial ventures. In our article published in the Journal of Business Venturing Insights, “The Artificially Intelligent Entrepreneur: ChatGPT, Prompt Engineering, and Entrepreneurial Rhetoric Creation”, we explore key opportunities and limitations of cutting-edge generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to transform how entrepreneurs convey ideas, engage with stakeholders, and potentially secure critical funding for their ventures.

Fine-tuning ChatGPT to mimic celebrity CEOs

Our study investigates how ChatGPT—and the GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 architectures that underlie it—can effectively emulate the communication styles of renowned CEOs like Elon Musk and Indra Nooyi. We demonstrate how generative models can produce tailored entrepreneurial pitches for various contexts, such as elevator pitches, crowdfunding campaigns, and social media promotions. By skillfully applying prompt engineering—the fine-tuning of inputs to achieve a desired output—we customized ChatGPT to capture the essence of four distinct CEO archetypes: the Creator, Transformer, Rebel, and Savior. The true power of ChatGPT lies in its ability to weave storytelling elements into these pitches, making them even more engaging and impactful. Our findings revealed that sequential prompts led the AI model to successfully enhance each pitch while preserving the distinctive style of each celebrity CEO.

The implications of our research extend well beyond the academic realm. Entrepreneurs, policymakers, and educators can harness generative language tools to craft customized narratives that resonate with target audiences, amplify social campaigns, and foster innovation. By mastering prompt engineering, users can tap into the full potential of generative models, creating persuasive and compelling communications that can redefine the entrepreneurial landscape. Underscoring this, we believe the strategic value of generative AI like ChatGPT is—and will continue to be—inextricably tied to effective prompt engineering.

Balancing generative AI’s potential with its pitfalls

Despite the groundbreaking and promising facets of this technology, it is also crucial to address the ethical implications and limitations of generative AI. While these potent tools can accelerate creativity, bolster productivity, and engage in stylistic mimicry, they can also produce unintended consequences such as confident assertions of false information (i.e., hallucinations) and even derogatory or harmful content. This potential should rightly lead us to question the veracity of assertions in business communications. As the adoption of AI-generated content continues to grow, entrepreneurs must thoughtfully examine and skillfully implement AI-generated content across diverse contexts. Effective prompt engineering helps alleviate, but fails to fully mitigate, this concern.

Looking ahead

Taken together, our work unveils the enormous potential of generative AI as a tool for stylistic mimicry and generation of theoretically-informed entrepreneurial narratives. Our demonstration of ChatGPT’s flexibility and power foreshadows how generative AI will continue to revolutionize how entrepreneurs communicate and engage with stakeholders. Through effective prompting, generative models can be employed to craft captivating narratives that drive success for new and more seasoned entrepreneurs alike.
